Rideshare & Autonomous Vehicle Wrecks in Atlanta: What’s Changing—and Why These Cases Are So Complex

Atlanta’s transportation landscape is shifting fast. Traditional Uber and Lyft rides are now sharing the road with fully Rideshare and Self-Driving Car Accidents in Atlanta: What You Need to Know

Atlanta traffic is tough. We sit in long lines on I-285, crawl through downtown on Peachtree, and dodge drivers on cell phones every day. Now, there’s something new on our roads—self-driving cars.

Waymo, Google’s self-driving car company, has brought its driverless cars to Atlanta. Since June 2025, you can even order a Waymo ride through the Uber app. That means more and more people are riding in cars with no human driver.

But what happens if you’re in a wreck while riding in Uber, Lyft, or a Waymo robotaxi? These cases are not simple. They are very different from regular car accident claims. Here’s why.

What Is TNC Coverage?

To understand rideshare accidents, you first need to know about something called TNC coverage.

TNC stands for Transportation Network Company. That’s just a legal term for companies like Uber and Lyft. Because these companies use regular people driving their own cars, Georgia law requires them to carry special insurance to protect passengers and others on the road.

Here’s how it works:

  1. When the app is OFF
    • If the driver is not using the app, their personal car insurance applies.
  2. When the app is ON but no passenger yet (waiting for a ride)
    • Uber or Lyft must provide at least $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for injuries, plus $25,000 for property damage.
  3. When the driver has accepted a ride or is carrying a passenger
    • The company must provide at least $1,000,000 in coverage for injuries or death.
  4. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UM/UIM)
    • If another driver causes the wreck but doesn’t have enough insurance, Uber and Lyft must still provide $100,000 per person / $300,000 per accident to cover passengers.

This is called TNC coverage. It’s one of the most important things to understand after a rideshare crash because it decides how much insurance money may be available to pay for your injuries.

Why Rideshare Wrecks Are Complicated

When two regular cars crash, it’s usually one driver’s insurance against the other. With rideshare, there are more players involved—the driver, the rideshare company, sometimes even the car manufacturer or software company if the car is self-driving.

Here are the main reasons these cases get messy:

  1. Different Insurance Periods – Coverage changes depending on whether the driver had the app off, on but waiting, or carrying a passenger.
  2. Passenger Protection Was Cut Back – In 2023, Georgia passed a law (HB 529) lowering the required insurance for passengers from $1 million down to $100,000 per person. That’s a big drop and can leave injured riders short.
  3. Contracts and Fine Print – Uber and Lyft often have riders agree to “arbitration,” which can limit your right to take them to court.
  4. Evidence Is Digital – Trip receipts, GPS data, in-app messages, even dash-cam video matter in these cases. Without quick action, this information can disappear.

Waymo in Atlanta: Self-Driving Cars Bring New Questions

Waymo has been testing its self-driving cars in Atlanta, and now they are available in parts of the city through the Uber app. These robotaxis don’t have a human behind the wheel.

If you’re hurt in a crash with a Waymo, the case gets even more complex. Questions include:

  • Was the Uber app in use? (If so, Uber’s TNC coverage may apply.)
  • Did the Waymo software make a mistake? (That could be a product liability case.)
  • Who else might be at fault? (Another driver? A maintenance company?)

Georgia law already has rules for self-driving cars (O.C.G.A. § 40-8-11), but the truth is, many of these cases are brand new. Lawyers have to look at software logs, sensor data, and test records to figure out what went wrong.

What to Do After a Rideshare or Self-Driving Car Crash in Atlanta

If you’re in a wreck while riding Uber, Lyft, or Waymo, here’s what you should do:

  1. Call 911 and get medical help. Even if you feel okay, injuries sometimes show up later.
  2. Save your ride information. Screenshot the trip receipt in the app and note the time, place, and car you were in.
  3. Get the police report. This helps prove what happened.
  4. Take photos if you can. Pictures of the cars, the scene, and your injuries are valuable.
  5. Get witness info. Names and phone numbers of people who saw the crash can help later.
  6. Talk to a lawyer before the insurance company. Insurance adjusters may try to get you to settle for less than you deserve.

Why You Shouldn’t Handle These Cases Alone

Insurance companies are experts at protecting their money. They know rideshare cases are confusing, and they count on people not knowing the rules.

Here’s why hiring an Atlanta injury lawyer makes a difference:

They deal with the stress. You can focus on healing while your lawyer fights with the insurance companies.

They know the law. An attorney understands Georgia’s TNC coverage rules and how new laws like HB 529 affect your claim.

They know where to look. Lawyers can get trip data, sensor logs, and other evidence that a regular person might not even know exists.

They fight for fair value. Even after attorney fees, studies show that people with lawyers end up with more money in their pocket than those who go it alone.

Bottom Line: Don’t Go It Alone

Rideshare and robotaxi wrecks in Atlanta blend fast-changing technology with Georgia-specific insurance and procedure. Between identifying the correct coverage period, navigating HB 529’s reduced UM/UIM protections, and unlocking AV sensor data, these cases are not one-size-fits-all.
